On top of a hill that combined the strategic importance of controlling the passage to and from Mani, but also the perfect climate, the Petropoulakis family chose to build the Towers (for the fourth time) 220 years ago.
The family – one of the largest in Mani – was found in the location of Rachi, just 3.5 km outside of Gytheio, after successive conflicts since 1690 (which first appeared in writing) with the Turks. It moved from the Castle of Kelefas of Palaiokaliazi, to Panitsa and finally to the location of Rachi.
