A unique sculpture of the ancient Greek world lives in Orei…
The Bull of the Orei encapsulates every eye with its unique plasticity and the liveliness of its form on Pentelic marble. The only sculptural exhibit is kept in a glass canopy near the port of Orei and was excavated in August 1965.
It was buried on the city beach and belongs to the Hellenistic era.
The sculpture consists of three large solid volumes. The muscles in the front of the body are attached with excellent carving.
Three folds near the neck determine the folding of the animal’s head, which is in an attacking position.
The sculpture, which was placed on a pedestal at a stand of three quarters, dates between 290 BC and in 280 BC.
Scholars link it to the existence of a sanctuary in the area considering the tribute of Demetrius the Besieger with a clear iconographic political meaning, referring to the reconstitution of the Common of Euboea by the Macedonian ruler.
