Vegan taste and its influence is a central topic of many researches. Happycow highlighted the top 10 vegan travel friendly destinations.
10 top destinations internationally “calling” travellers to indulge in the most ultimate vegan dining experience
The top 10 cities in the world, which are friendly to vegan (vegetarian) travellers, reveals a report by HappyCow. The list is determined by metrics based on:
- The number of fully vegan restaurants within a 10km radius of each city centre
- The number of fully vegan businesses within a 10km radius of each city centre
- The density of vegan businesses, per capita
- The growth of vegan businesses since their last report
- How active the vegan community is
Vegan diets have gained significant popularity especially in recent years. In fact, some sources have reported a 600% increase in the number of people identifying as vegan between 2014 and 2017. The availability of vegan foods in grocery stores, vegan menu options in restaurants, and media headlines citing benefits of vegan diets have contributed to this trend.
A study revealed that the most important reason for choosing a vegan diet is to support human behaviour towards animals.
People, however, choose a vegan diet because they believe it has a positive impact on the environment. Several research studies have shown that adopting a vegan diet is better for the planet than other diets, including the popular Mediterranean diet.

Vegan restaurants are on the rise
This is Happy Cow’s first exhibition since the pandemic that has changed the landscape of vegan restaurants in some cities around the globe. After a significant decline in 2019-2021, the growth of vegan restaurants worldwide continues again at an even faster pace in comparison to 2019.
Four new cities were added to the list this year. These are Melbourne, Singapore, Amsterdam and Barcelona, replacing Toronto, Portland, Tel Aviv and Prague. Bangkok, Los Angeles and Warsaw remain in the top 10.
Warsaw is back on the list in ninth place. Amsterdam came in eighth place with a 78% increase in vegan businesses across the city in the last three years of the pandemic.
Barcelona rounds out the list in tenth place due to a 74% increase in veganism, which is a pleasant surprise considering Spain’s reputation for meat-heavy cuisine.
