Hobbit houses, creations of a brilliant literary pen, inspired the construction of great buildings you can visit and live like Frodo Baggins.
Welcome to the idyllic Shire village! Here where time flows at different tempo (each year began on Saturday and ended on Friday), with nature all dressed up and the flowerbeds filled with all sorts of wares that will accompany glorious feasts under the watchful eye of a star-studded sky.
Inhabitants of this land and the small joys of plain everyday life, the shy but otherwise friendly Hobbits, whose height does not exceed 0.60 cm (up to 1.00 m). Lovers of farming and mushroom hunting, fear and terror of squirrels and hares, sharp shooters with the use of slings and bows, party animals, live peacefully with an average life expectancy of 100 years.
Dressed in bright colors (yellow and green), these lilliputian bon vivants soak up every moment of life, having fun and flirting with their souls in community gathering places where beer flowed abundantly, in inns.
Their passion is gardening with good holding sway over their 7 daily meals (breakfast, 2nd breakfast, elevenses, i.e. a short break at 11.00am to have a drink or snack, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner and late night supper), they enjoyed bread, meat, potatoes, cheese while they did not hide their preference for tobacco, when almost lazily sitting in front of the fire of their houses they recalled stories and events of earlier times.
Unforgettable heroic tales and unrepeatable fantasy adventures that captivated young and old, with leading heroes the tiny creatures inspired the construction of impressive Hobbit houses reminiscent of the homes of Tolkien’s peaceful and dreamy heroes.
Live, if only mentally, like Frodo Baggins and enjoy snapshots of breathtaking buildings and landscapes emphatically interwoven with bucolic and rural life.
Simon Dale’s building in West Wales
Let’s start from the very beginning. Somewhere in Wales, lives Simon Dale. The exorbitant debts to the banks led the 32-year-old to the decision to build his own house inspired by fairy tales.
Dale took his family, loaded up with chisels, saws and hammers and built an eco-friendly house, which cost only 3,000 (Εnglish) pounds and is 100% … handmade.
He used wood for the floor. For furniture he used what he found in garbage cans and what was washed away by a nearby stream, while for the construction of the roof he used straw and tree branches. While Simon Dale carved and tinkered, his wife, Jasmine, and two children lived in a tent at the countryside.
Nestled on a small hill in the Welsh countryside, the house is very reminiscent of the small, functional and beautiful Hobbit houses from Tolkien’s trilogy.
Hobbiton in New Zealand
Hobbiton, the Hobbit village, was built to meet the requirements of the film in a magnificent natural environment, in the Matamata region of New Zealand. Nowadays, the Hobbit village is used by a nearby farm. The tiny houses are now shelters for… sheep!
Peter Archer’s house
Architect Peter Archer designed a small retreat in rural Chester County, about 50 kilometers northwest of Philadelphia, USA. The fantastic residence inspired by the two famous novels, “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings” was built to be a residence for those, who love nature and short escapes away from the city.It is noteworthy that the house has been turned into a small museum with objects such as books, figurines, etc., which its owner has been collecting for 30 years!
Chris Whited’s building
A charming wavy roof made of pebbles, asymmetrical walls and a watermill, make up the image of a house that sprung from the most beautiful fairy tales. The house was built by Chris Whited and is located on Bainbridge Island, Washington. It has a total area of 1,200 square feet and is utterly habitable.
The Hobbit House in Montana
It’s called Hobbit Villageis and it’s totally inspired by Tolkien’s famous fictional characters. During the spring and summer, the Hobbit House is visited by Hobbit-loving crowds. With prices starting at $195 a night, guests can even feel like Frodo Baggins by spending the night in one of his rooms.
The Hobbit House, in northwestern Montana, about a three-hour drive from Spokane, Washington, is a guest house with just 1 unit.Quite a unit though! The website shows a 1,000-square-foot structure built into a hill, on a 20-acre site with structures ranging from small to child-friendly. Troll-shaped house, hobbit houses with a round door and chimney pipes and many fairy houses the size of a shoebox!
At the rooms, the furniture is made by hand, while Internet and luxury systems are also available. It may sound quite odd, but the Hobbit Hotel is only suitable for adults, in accordance with the wish of the owner, Steve Michael, to help guests bring out the inner child in a completely peaceful place completely in harmony with the natural habitat.
A Hobbit, according to the books, wishes to have a comfortable home, and the inn, shaped like an inverted bowl on the inside, is exactly what is looking for! Mr. Michaels, the owner, charges $245 a night and paid about $410,000 to build and furnish it.
Green Dragon Pub, the Hobbit bar in New Zealand
The bar is located in Hobbiton near Matamata, the same location where the legendary trilogy was filmed, and was created by Brian Massey and a team of 80 workers. It is characteristic that at the opening of the bar, the Prime Minister of New Zealand himself, John Key, opened its door for the first time.
The well-known “Green Dragon” where the Hobbits enjoyed their favorite beer (as well as their creator, Tolkien) ceased to be just a place to visit and functions normally as a pub, even constituting the last stop of the tour, where visitors sit enjoying their beer normally at the same tables and in the same place as Frodo Baggins, Sam Gamgee and their friends Merry and Pippin did on TV.
