What is chutney?

Chutney is a sauce or sauce base with roots in Indian cuisine, containing ingredients such as aromatic spices, vegetables or fruits, vinegar and sugar. When adapted to Anglo-Indian cuisine it began to contain fruits such as the classic apple, mango and others, by becoming softer and sweeter with the addition of sugar.

Later on, vinegar was added so that it could be better preserved for longer periods. The Indian version usually contains mustard oil to preserve it while in the Anglo-Indian version there is vinegar, which makes it softer in taste. Chutney is usually consumed accompanied by cheese, meat and poultry.

How chutney is used

Chutneys can be used as dips for vegetables, bread, cheese and cold cuts or in cooking as well. They can act as spices providing with an extra flavor and aroma.

In addition, four of them do not include sugar but contain natural fruit sugars. These are Pepper, smoked pepper, Orange and Apple.

Apple’s health benefits have been recorded since the Middle Ages.
